review 1: Gave up on this halfway through, once the materialism and Republican-libertarianism became totally unbearable. When did Rita Mae Brown become Ayn Rand? Also mildly irksome is the inclusion (quite briefly, and apparently only introduced as an accessory for the protagonist) of a "token" black character. His description in the cast of characters-- "He is also an African American. Garvey's many white friends don't see him as a black man..."-- frankly comes across as outdated and a bit unenlightened. Like someone who takes their cues on race relations from Driving Miss Daisy.
review 2: An odd book. Picked up at a used book sale I thought it may be a cute read with the pets taking centre stage but they actually were more of a stilted add on than needed for the plot. C
... moreharacter interaction was off - conversations didn't flow but we're random and oddly I sensed a theme of anti-big government running through this supposedly light novel. The killer is found and all closes dramatically in a bizarre scene and the following typing up of loose ends is unsatisfying. Avoid this one. less
