review 1: This is the first book I have read by Rita Mae Brown, and I savored every page of it. I was a bit intimidated by the long list of characters in the front of the book because in the past I have become thoroughly confused with more people than I could keep track of. However, I found having a brief description of everyone was a big help since I did not read any other books in the series before this one. I also do not feel that I need to read the other books to understand this one. Rita Mae Brown may very well be the animal whisperer as she really seems to have a great deal of insight into the animals conversations! The personalities of each one come through with what they say and do. As an animal lover, I thought that was a nice touch. And I definitely enjoyed the mystery! F... morerom the first person found with missing fingers to the skeleton caught up the roots of a fallen tree, the book kept me turning pages.I'll be looking for more books by this author, and I recommend that you do too.
review 2: It's been a long time since I've read a Mrs. Murphy mystery and I didn't enjoy this book at all compared to how much I've always enjoyed this series. There was far too little mystery and way too much random discussion of "The Times: They Have Changed And Not For The Better." Every conversation that wasn't about the mystery seemed to be a variation on this theme. (Some I agreed with, some I didn't, it was still too not relevant to the story. I read an ARC; maybe it was edited out before publication.)I also didn't enjoy the mystery as much as I normally do. Well, I did enjoy the "cold case" mystery but didn't enjoy the one that took place solely in the present day. I'll still come back to this series because I so much enjoy the pets and other animals of Crozet. (Provided by publisher) less

A tad on the juvenile side, but entertaining and satisfying, especially by the cats & tucker.
