review 1: Harvest time has reached old Virginia and Halloween is just around the corner. Harry, her husband, Fair, their cats Mrs Murphy and Pewter, and their Welsh Corgi Tucker are getting ready for a Halloween Hayride when they come across a scarecrow being pecked at by crows. It turns out to be the body of a local accountant and he proves to be only the first. Can Mrs Murphy and her friends protect their beloved humans from a deranged killer, especially with Harry having a nose for mystery?Litter of the Law is part of Rita Mae Brown's Mrs Murphy Mysteries. The series started back in 1990 with Wish You Were Here. It introduce the newly divorced Mary Minor Haristeen, Harry to her friends, with her animal companions Mrs. Murphy, a grey tiger cat, and Tucker, her Welsh Corgi. People ... moreand animals have come and gone since then. Harry remarried her former husband, Fair. Pewter, a rotund grey cat joined Mrs. Murphy and Tucker. Friendships have shattered and reformed.I have always enjoyed this series, but lately, it seems to have gotten a bit stale. While some of the changes added a new dynamic to the story, others have seemed to have not worked as well. This latest attempt is an interesting "whodunnit" it seems to lack some of the spark of the earlier books in the series. I still found it enjoyable and think fans of the series will still be rooting for Harry and her friends.
review 2: The 21st in the Mrs. Murphy mystery series isn’t Ms. Brown’s best, but it is enjoyable, nonetheless. Harry finds two dead bodies this time around, and the macabre ways each is found are pretty exciting for a cozy. I enjoyed the usual banter between Mrs. Murphy, Pewter, Tucker, and the rest of the animals they come across in Crozet. A vixen in a foxhole provides a lot of giggles as she verbally spars with the chunky Pewter. Harry continues to amaze me in that she is either the bravest heroine in cozy mystery-land OR the stupidest, the way she continually blunders into finding out the whodunit when she should keep her nose out! Warnings from equine veterinarian husband Fair, Deputy Coop, Sheriff Rick Shaw (ha – his name always cracks me up), and even her animals don’t deter her. Lucky for the beautiful architect, Tazio, Harry is stupid-brave, once again! This installment’s Virginia history lesson involved paper genocide of Native American Indians. Interesting. As an avid listener of the audio version of Mrs. Murphy’s mysteries, I was thrilled that narrator Kate Forbes once again is the reader for the one in the series. Her voice inflections as men, women, and even the animals are different enough to be able to discern one from another without sounding ridiculous. She is terrific. The 22nd releases soon, and I’m looking forward to another visit with my favorite Virginians! less

Brown frequently has interesting things to teach while she's entertaining her readers.

What a good way to celebrate Halloween than a murder mystery set during the same time!

One of the more gruesome stories from Crozet, Virginia.
