review 1: Patches is a little girl, she's seen 5 harvests. But those days have been full of loneliness and unkindness. It seems that Patches has never been able to do anything right in the sight of her mum or grandmum. But now her mum is taking her to be a slave of the Goddess, Patches isn't quite sure what that means. She soon discovers that the Goddess and the Priestesses that work in her Temple are kind. Patches is given a new name, Peaches, new clothes, love and responsibilities. Life is soon better for her, except for the demon Naga, who seems to want to kill Peaches. Luckily, there always seems to be someone around to save her from Naga just in the nick of time. But will someone always be around to save her, or will Peaches be caught unaware?I thought that this was a cute nove... morella, it's way short, I was able to read it in under an hour. I wasn't thrilled with Patches/Peaches mother in the first chapter, it made me sad to see someone be so mean to someone so young. But in the end, I could kind of understand her mother. I liked the characters in this book, I would have liked to have seen more of the story, in some places it seemed a little bit too quick, I guess you expect that with such a short story. Overall, this was a really fun book to read!
review 2: An excerpt:It is late afternoon when I come to the stream. The spring rains muddied the trail, and I slip down the embankment, smudging my white dress. Laughing, I stumble to my feet and splash through the water to the grandfather tree towering on the other side.“You’re scaring the fish.” A boy, kneeling beside the water, scowls at me. His brown hair hangs in a tangled mess; his piercing blue eyes stare out from a dirty face. I plop beside him and peer into the water, still rippling from where I tromped through. “Sorry. Catch any tadpoles? I heard the frogs have woken from their winter nap.”“You’re a girl. Girls don’t like frogs.”“Looks like you don’t know everything.” I snag a crayfish from under a river rock. It squirms, pincers trying to nip at me. “Some girls don’t mind things that are slimy.”He grins. “Betcha I can find a bigger bullfrog than you.”“Don’t think that just because I’m a girl, I can’t beat the socks off you.” I fold my arms across my chest.“I’m not wearing socks.”I glance down at his muddy toes. “You’re wasting time. Ready. Get set; go.”We rush in opposite directions, and I head toward the lily pads where I know the frogs love to sit. I search over and under every pad and lily and then tromp through the mud. I don’t hear one croak or splash, don’t see one frog hopping. Nothing. And then I spot it. The biggest, fattest bullfrog I’ve ever seen. He glares at me, as if to say, “No way you can catch me.”I jump and he slides through my fingers. I stumble after him, and he leaps out of reach.“Come back here, you crazy frog.”Laughter sounds behind me. I turn to find the boy sitting on a rock, watching me with a big grin on his face. His hands are as empty as mine.“I’ll chase him your way, and you catch him.” He splashes through the water, and the frog turns and swims straight for me. Using my skirt as a net, I scoop him up. Croaking and wiggling, I can barely hold him. He is so big around it takes both my hands to pick him up. “Let me see him.” The boy picks him up and looks him in the eyes. “My, you are a big fellow. May you find a fat girlfriend and have many fat babies together.” The frog croaks back.“Yes, I’ll let you go.” Then he tosses it back into the water and then gives me a lopsided grin. “Bet I can climb to the top of that tree faster than you.” less
