review 1: One Giant Leap by Robert Burleigh is a book about the first landing on the moon in 1969. The book is based off of real people, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The book tells all about the adventure. The book also won the Orbis Pictus Award, which was well deserved. The pictures in this book are breath taking. They are amazing picture that makes the reader relate to what Armstrong and Aldrin saw. The setting of the book is very clear. It obviously takes place on the moon. The characters are the two real people who went to the moon. The book has a ton of factual information that is very specific and informative. The information is very accurate and authentic. For example the first page starts out “July 20, 1969. Seventy miles up, the two spaceships, Eagle and Columbia, sep... morearate.” This tells us how far up they were and the names of the spaceships. The information is very organized, the beginning starts with telling us the date and how they first arrive and the ending is back on Earth. The last page states “A place called Earth: fragile, beautiful, home.” This book is most definitely appealing to children. The paintings are amazing and the information is organized in a style that is fun to read and puts the facts in a story like plot. The author writing style is very clear, and also shows a sense of enthusiasm and how exciting this event has been to America and our history. I really enjoyed this book. I learned facts that I never actually knew. The pictures were excellent and caught my attention. I would use this book in my classroom in a science or history class and teach about the first moon landing and space. There is so much information in this book to read and I am positive the children would be fascinated and enjoy learning about this. This is definitely a book I would recommend!
review 2: One Giant Leap by Robert Burleigh won the Orbis Pictus Award. This was a very good book! Not only does it have amazing pictures, the story itself is very informative and shares specific information I didn’t actually know myself. This story is about the first landing on the moon on July 20, 1969 by Neil Armstrong ha Buzz Aldrin. The book goes into a lot of detail about what was happening on their trip and landing on the moon. The setting of the book is clearly indentified, seeing as though they are on the moon! The characters in this book are based off of real people, Armstrong and Aldrin, who were the first two to ever land on the moon. This book displays factual information as well as documented information. The author does a good job as conveying this information in an organized fashion. The author dates the book on the 20th and 21st, the two days spent on the moon before talking about the events that happened that day. The format of the book and the illustrations are very appealing to children. The book displays really cool and good illustrations as well as real pictures. I think many children would enjoy looking at this book for the pictures solely. However, the information is very vital too. The author doesn’t confuse the reader at all, and is very clear in it’s writing. The book doesn’t have an overload of information, but just the right amount to understand how truly amazing that day was.I thought this book was a very good book to read. What struck me in this book is how much I actually didn’t know about that day and every little detail about the things that happened. I would definitely use this book in my classroom in my science class and learning about the first moon landing. This book offers a lot of factual information in an easy and good book that children would enjoy reading. I would recommend other teachers to use this book in their class as well. less
