review 1: Highly readable biography permeated by a thoughtful tone. Besides life events, the focus is on the inspiration for the Hopper's work, with the final question being philosophical. When asked why he painted, he responded, "Why do I paint? Well," he finally answered, "I'm after ME." The book was illustrated by Wendell Minor using "gouache watercolor on Strathmore 500 Bristol paper." The back matter includes an Afterword entitled "Edward Hopper, Hero, Explorer, and Artist" as well as a few of his comments on art. Four of his paintings offer an opportunity for discussion. Important dates from his life, and Wendell Minor concludes the back matter with his views on Hopper's art and legacy, plus a special thanks to art historian and author, Gail Levin.

... morehat a fabulous book! I've loved Edward Hopper's work ever since we all used to fight over getting the Nighthawks card in Masterpiece, even if it was the forgery! ;) And I was excited to see it in person as an adult at the Art Institute of Chicago. This is a beautifully illustrated, nicely done juvenile biography of the artist. There should be a whole series of books done like this to introduce today's children to yesterday's art. less
