review 1: The design of this book is so catchy that I immediately wanted to read it. It's in a 1950 like style, with tri-color (red, blue and yellow, with black/grey as well) illustrations. My son loves all the vehicles in the book and asked us to read it often. However, some of the rhyme and rhythm don't follow as well as they could and were sometimes easy to stumble over. However, my biggest complaint, one that I just couldn't see past after my first reading? EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE ENTIRE CITY IS CAUCASIAN. Everyone. What are the chances of that, do you think? The city depicted looks very New York or London-esque, with double decker buses, a subway, raised railway cars, etc. There are people everywhere: on sidewalks, on buses, waiting for the subway... But not one single person ... moreof color??? A serious, serious omission on the illustrator's part, imho.
review 2: My five year old loves this, though sometimes I ask myself whether the sounds are 'of things that go' or just general sounds for things that go, if you see what I mean. If you are looking for specific sounds like the whish-whish of a street sweeper, not really.Instead each 2 page spread has a short rhyme about things that go in the city at a part of the day and a time reference (Wake up, City! Lunch time, City! Play Time, City) with a set of related noise/onomatopoeia words in large text. The rhyming scheme is not great, but the colorful illustrations make up for it. If you have a truck-car-things-that-go fan in your house, it'll probably go over well. less
