review 1: This was interesting, but never compelling. It's a standard IR book about the South China Sea region, which the author believes to be the most likely conflict spot over the coming decades as China grows, the U.S. (relatively) declines, and the other Southeast Asian countries emerge. The first chapter lays out the conflict, and the subsequent chapters go from country to country, examining their perspective and potential role in a future conflict. I appreciated the country-by-country approach, which I found more engaging (and memorable) than a book that divided chapters by IR or conflict theme. This was a useful introduction to the subject, but probably not very interesting for someone with previous knowledge of the subject.
review 2: There is some very good
... morefood for thought here but Kaplan is so repetitive that it's almost comical. I also take some issue with the fact that he take it as wrote that AMERICA = GOOD and CHINA = BAD.The intros to all of his chapters were all kind of awful as well. They read like a 20 year old doing a study abroad program in Asia who is writing a facebook post to his friends trying to brag about how AUTHENTIC everything he experiences is. Yawn. less
