review 1: A disappointing read. The preface was promising but there onwards it starts to go downhill. The subject of geopolitics is interesting, but the world traveling author makes it a daunting read because everything is jumbled and feels under researched. Kaplan has a way to gorge out the imminent people in the field like it was only convenient to do so then to actually form his own. At that point of repeated lines. I lost interest and pushed only to finish the book faster.
review 2: It was difficult to tear myself away once I got started. Kaplan has told this story in a masterful way. I have one mild concern, and that regards his use of geography to explain current events, and even possible paths forward, based on the same geographical premises. As an explanation
... morefor geopolitical history I find his narrative compelling. While he seems to caution adequately against determinism, there seem elements of his prognosticating that almost must be somewhat deterministic, and remove from the players their ability to shape events. I can't help but think that an updated version of this same work would have a quite different last couple chapters after the events unfolding now are shaped in ways that Kaplans "revenge" is unable to direct. I believe you'll not be sorry for spending the time with this one, even if you disagree with some lines of reasoning. less

Far from my expectation. Too journalistic than what I thought of a geopolitical reading.
