review 1: A good book that could have been a great one; if Dan Brown and Frank Peretti wrote a book together, this would probably be it.This book started out so promising. An interesting concept in the whole Angels and Demons are real kind of thing, a clandestine society created to protect a secret that could mean the end of the world, characters forced to confront their past to deal with the future; all pointed toward a promising book. And for awhile, this held up. The first half to 2/3's of the book that dealt with the actual investigation was a well paced, fairly interesting story much in the lines of Dan Brown. But once the final conflict started kicking off, something happened: the characters got lost. The action and supernatural elements took over and the characters, whos... moree arcs were close to being resolved, were left behind in favor of an action sequence that rushed the reader toward the end. Having read Dan Brown and James Rollins, two of the masters of investigative action romp, the characters in their novels grow through the action, often finding a new part of themselves or developing a new relationship. Here, the characters were essentially the same at the end as they were in the beginning and it left me feeling unfulfilled in spite of the fact that I really wanted to be enjoying myself. Despite all this, this is only Robert Brown's first novel, and for that it was a generally successful one. I can see him finding more of his voice as he continues to write and hopefully he will distinguish himself from the rest of the field. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Dan Brown or James Rollins (another author you should check out) and is looking for something a little different to read. The qualms I have stated above are there not because this was a bad book, but rather one that failed to live up to its potential. It is a good book; it just could have been a great one.
review 2: The date is set. Lucifer will be released, to take over the world, providing the key to his cage is found. In righteous hands, however, the key, in the form of a girl, can bring Paradise on Earth. A tug of war among the righteous and dark angels ensues.Meanwhile as the world hurtles into chaos, Agent Bernadette Callahan investigates bizarre murders. Their cause makes no sense, and she scorns the "nutcase" drunkard who has been pushed to join her. But Sebastian Lalaurie is a psychic, and once he shows Bernadette the paranormal side of reality, her skepticism dissolves, with believable reluctance. What was bizarre, now makes sense. Those who were murdered were guardians, but of what? The lost pages of Milton's Paradise Lost provide the answer, which only Sebastian can read. With time running out, the two humans join Michael, the archangel, in a race to find the key and to save humanity. The novel is divided into books. I felt that the novel's beginning was slow and that we wouldn't have lost anything if the story began at Book III. Browne sets the tone of the novel that is depressing because it spotlights the worst of the human condition as it exists today. Nevertheless it grips the reader, and we know that the slim hope of redemption will be realized. Browne surprises us,though, in how the story ends. A most logical ending. less
