review 1: This novel combines my two favorite genres; science fiction and murder mysteries. That does not make it unique but the way Sawyer weaves the tale is. The references and style that pays homage to classic detective stories combined with the interesting descriptions of life on Mars makes for a compelling tale and a fun change of pace for Sawyer fans. I for one would not mind if he goes back to this setting for a future novel or maybe shorter works.
review 2: This was a fun mash-up of detective noir and science fiction. The first part of the book is a previously published story which is then expanded into a full novel. This section is probably the best part of the book. The writing is tight and witty. Following this there is a noticeable break in the pace of the bo... moreok and it takes about 50 pages to really pick up again. Also the classic references seemed a little cliche to me. Overall enjoyable. less
