review 1: I had read several reviews after deciding to read this book and they almost changed my mind. Glad I stuck to my initial choice and gave it a chance. Interesting premise and execution. I was put off by the change in narrator at first, but soon got into the flow of the book. I was hooked. Having never read Sawyer before, I wasn't sure what to expect. Many general reviews stated that they couldn't figure out why he had won so many awards. I can understand why. Although the book gave more technology than was always necessary, this is hard sci-fi for the computer age. Highly recommended.
review 2: I had mixed feelings about this audiobook, but in the end I like it. I was initially put off by the schoolgirl-like voice of Caitlin, the 15-year-old protagonist.
... more I thought, "Oh No! One of those syrupy, doe-eyed teenage girl books." and turned it off. (This might be more related to the audio performance than to the writing ... not sure.) But I came back to it later and there is much more to it. I enjoyed the references and connections to information theory, the ideas on formation of intelligence and consciousness in animals, humans, and computer systems. Some of the web world references are dated at this point and the jokes were ancient. I don't think this is really a Young Adult book ... the language isn't appropriate and there's too much technical ... but it's a bit light for an adult book. Hmm ... less

Fun. Somewhat predictable. Likable character. hilariously vague Gibson references a plus.

Really like the whole series. Brilliant protrayal of an A.I.
