review 1: I like historical fiction, and I give more leeway to an author writing historical fiction than I would to an author writing fiction. Having said that, this was a little too slow for me. Don't get me wrong, it is well written and the subject matter is (mostly) interesting, but the point of view is that of poets and writers who spend more time talking than doing. I'm glad I read this, but I need some action. Time for a spy thriller.
review 2: Intriguing storey which has sparked a burning curiosity concerning the bit of Russian history from 1925 to 1940. ... moref this story are extremely superficial. The novel is, in essence, a history/biography of a man who, under slightly different circumstances, would have been a poet hero in his lifetime. But in the supremely paranoid world of the Russian intelligentsia in Stalin's 1930's, he became a man whom Stalin seems to have taken a personal interest in grinding to dust. less
