review 1: The narrator of this story is Annie. The story takes place in the mountains of western North Carolina. The writing is rich and gentle. A follow up book to Gap Creek, the reader follows the lives of Hank and Julie Richards and their family as they leave Gap Creek. The struggles of the depression, WWII, death, love and the strength of family is the heart of this book. Morgan is a son of the mountains and that is what makes this book so authentic.
review 2: I have to say I did not enjoy this book as much as I did Gap Creek. If I could give the book 3 1/2 stars I would. It was better than a three. I usually enjoy books written in the first person and that was no exception with this book. However, it felt disjointed to me as it jumped back and forth in time and
... moreat times that confused me. I also felt that her dialect started out strong but did not carry through as strong through the end of the book. The other thin about this book that kind of annoyed me was how huge a role Old Pat took. One would think the dog was the main character. It would make more sense that Annie would focus on the dog so much if she were younger, but she is an adult telling her story and that of her family. I couldn't really figure out why the dog took such a prominent role. It was a good book and I was surprised to see a sequel to gap creek since that was published 14 years ago already. I was a bit disappointed that I did not like this nearly as much as I did Gap Creek. less

Not quite as strong as Gap Creek, but I still enjoyed reading about this time in our past.

A quiet read of love and loss, sprinkled with old-fashioned truisms.
