review 1: It took me a long time to get into Gap Creek, not so with this sequel. I started it on Saturday finished it on Sunday. I wouldn't call it a page turner. I would call it a very good story. You would not need to read Gap Creek to enjoy this book. The two books stand well on there own. I think Gap Creek is the better book because the story had more depth. This sequel was an easier quicker read. The only criticisms are the dialect writing seemed a bit forced and the story jumped around a bit. It is a style I understand but didn't think enhanced the story and may have detracted from it. I want to read more by this author. I can learn from him.
review 2: I enjoyed this book although not as much as Gap Creek which I read years ago. There is no climax and no
... moredenouement, just a series of memories told by Annie as she recalls the hardships and joys faced during the Great Depression and WWII. Because the memories were not in chronological order, it was difficult for me to glean her age at the time of the memory. Was she 13 or 27? Only rarely did I find out and it was a mental stumbling block for me in an otherwise gentle, compelling novel. less
