review 1: Basic Premise: A detailed explanation of the migration of the monarch butterflies. This was a free Nook download, but I think if my son had asked for me to pay for it I would have. It kept his interest, which is always a task. He doesn't often pick nonfiction, so it was an exciting new choice. As a level 3 book, it had longer sentences (though still fairly simple) and more details. There were also some longer, more scientific terms, and each time they popped up there was a clear phonetic pronunciation guide included. My son even pronounced the words along with the "read-to-me" voice. The illustrations combined photos with realistic art to show the butterflies' journey. It also had maps, which was useful for showing the little guy where we live in relation to the jour... moreney. Overall, it was a fun, educational read. I rather enjoyed it.
review 2: Title: Flight of the ButterfliesSummary: This text talks about the journey the monarch butterfly takes on it's yearly migration. It uses very vivid images to clarify the text.Focus: Informational Features to Use in a Writing Mini LessonImages/Graphics Clarify a Text: This book would be forty kinds of boring if it weren't for the really great images. It shows young writers that even the blandest of text can be made special by adding graphics that match the writing. The images help the reader understand the text (that they may have slept through) and are quite vivid. Authors Choice/Mixing Graphics and Images: The text using maps and images to clarify the text. This blend shows new writers that the author controls how to present information in their text and must select the best image for the text. CCSS W.2.2 less
