review 1: I don't think I've ever before read a book where I struggled to get through the prologue. The author's prose style and affectations were simply that annoying to me. There's a density to his work that I think is intentional, but the hints he gives which are supposed to entice deeper investigation are instead frustrating. In the prologue alone, we have evil communist nazis who are working for pope Aleister Crowley, and who include among their number witchfinder Matthew Hopkins. The historical anachronisms I was prepared to accept as inherent in the premise, and indeed, if handled well, could be fine. But this is a theme park version of history and a grating one at that. It's history written by a sixth grader who didn't read past the first paragraph of any of the wikipe... moredia entries. To be fair to the author, this may be intentional - apparently the virtual reality in which this is set was created by the US military, which presumably means it was tendered out to the lowest bidder - but even so.And this is just the prologue - after forcing my way through that, I found myself unable to get more than about five pages into the first chapter, which introduces the hero of the story. To compound this, the book is a doorstopper, and it's the first of four in its series (which, needless to say, I will not be reading any of).To paraphrase Monty Python: this is not a book for reading, this is a book for lying down and avoiding.
review 2: I loved the concept of the story. several of the characters are easy to like. most are deliberately easy to hate. if you were to throw all religions a belief systems into a country then throw up a huge wall around it that would be where we begin. I would love to tell you how it ends however as most stories go now a days it does not end with anything but a cliffhanger for its follow up. all of the characters hang over an void with a to be continued tag. less

I couldn't even finish this book. It was so disjointed and hard to keep up with that I just gave up.
