review 1: This was the June SF Discussion Group’s title. This book is a strange mix of characters that once lived and fictional characters---cheer on the fictional characters most of the historical characters are on the nasty side. It all starts when the President’s daughter gets trapped inside a computer war game and Ella is sent in to rescue her. This is the first in a series but I found it frustrating to read over 500 pages and have the book end without any serious signs of completion. The Winter of the subtitle ends but our heroine is left almost literally on a cliff and the various other characters who were leading rebellions or creating other kinds of mischief all are left in Limbo until the next book. I may wait until the series is complete before I consider picking... more up another of the series or maybe I’ll wait for the Cliff note version. The villains are definitely evil and the book contains everything (and everyone) but the kitchen sink but something is definitely missing. Read with the proper mindset this could be one of the most terrifying books you’ll ever read; luckily all those historical baddies are too busy fighting each other to join up for an assault on the real world.
review 2: Featuring some of the most tedious acronyms ever, but a pretty fun plot. I liked the range of interesting female characters (some awesome, others pathetic, all relatively realistic) but the third person narration was sometimes jarringly male-gazey ("Trixie slid down, landing on her pert bottom." Really? Pert?). Ended on a cliff-hanger which I suppose means I have to get around to reading book two at some point! less
