review 1: This book takes place during the Civil War and follows the adventures of Homer P. Figg. Homer is a young boy who experiences his brother being illegally signed up to join the army by his mean and ruthless uncle. Homer finally decides that it is time to sneak out of his uncle's house and go save his brother which starts a quest to travel southward in which he meets many curious characters. This was a wonderful book that takes a different look at life during the Civil War. The way the author gives the reader a look at the Civil War through the eyes of a cunning and curious child is a great change of pace. No doubt a great book to refer to children who wish to learn more about this point in time and a change of view from most text books.
review 2: When Homer’
... mores underage brother is tricked and sold into the Union Army, Homer sets off on a journey to find him and free him before he gets himself killed in the war. Homer makes friends and foes along the way, and his penchant for lying leads to a number of hilarious situations. The book becomes less funny and more poignant toward the end, but Homer’s love for his brother rings true throughout the story and keeps both Homer and the reader going. The book is actually fairly educational about the Battle of Gettysburg, and elements of the time period—like hot-air balloons used for spying and Underground Railroad operations. Homer’s voice is compelling, and bonus content items like a buttermilk pancake recipe and a glossary of Civil War slang will keep readers entertained even after the story is finished. The bonus material contains instructions for creating messages in invisible ink. An interactive display that allows patrons to write invisible messages could be both fun and educational, if Civil War books and fun facts are displayed nearby. less
