review 1: This book is about a kid whose underage brother is sold to the army and he’s stuck with a guardian that doesn’t want him and treats him horribly. This boy is forced to use his imagination to get through it. Using his creativeness, he sets off to go save his brother. He joins this traveling show and he becomes part of a show, doing his own act as pig-boy. He makes the situation he is in and makes it fun. He has fun with his imagination. This is also to learn from. The author includes facts about the Battle of Gettysburg, while also explaining some of the facts about the Civil War including names like Frederick Douglas and the Emancipation Proclamation and briefing explain them. This book can be used as an introduction to a history lesson; great tool to learn more about ... morethe Battle of Gettysburg and the important factors during this time.Philbrick, W. R. (2009). review 2: Another Civil War era story for me - but from a kid's POV. Homer is a plucky, likable orphan with a lot of courage and love. He sure gets around during this book, and meets some interesting characters. He's like the Huck Finn of the Civil War. Crazy transportation, a traveling circus show, and shysters and hucksters make for some exciting adventures. This book would be great for kids, especially boys, maybe 12 and up. There are a few dangerous situations and scary parts, but the worst part was some descriptive stuff about the battle of Gettysburg. less
