review 1: In this Newbery 2015 candidate book, twelve-year-old Zane Dupree goes to New Orleans to meet his great grandmother for the first time. The problem is he arrives a few days before Hurricane Katrina. Zane is separated from his great grandmother when they attempted to evacuate and is left to fend for himself in the hurricane aftermath. A very poignant tale with memorable characters. The book includes a fantastic afterword with additional information and references. This the second Mock Newbery book that I read with a multiracial main character meeting a grandmother for the first time. A trend?
review 2: I had a hard time putting this book down once I started it. It is about a young boy, Zane Dupree, who traveled to New Orleans to meet the grandmother who raised h
... moreis father. Zane's father had died before he was born and his mother just discovered this long lost relative. Mom couldn't go with him from New Hampshire but he was able to take his dog Bandit. Not long after he arrived in New Orleans Hurricane Katrina decided to land and cause a great deal of devastation. Through Zane's eyes we experience how horrible it was as he is separated from his Grandmother and experiences it first hand. Really good and suspenseful. less
