review 1: This book, written before the prequel which wasn't great, is actually a darned good read. The main character, Mac, is not too unbelievably clever or sexy, but he's pretty much the blue eyed boy of the department. He has to work hard and think hard, but overall he doesn't have a hard life, partly because his father was a famous cop and partly because he had the foresight to get a law degree which certainly helped.Indeed he is depicted as a fairly sharp character, not to mention fast on his feet. The plot isn't particularly deep but it's a fun read that'll keep you until the last page. Another reviewer said that he thought the plot was somewhat predictable, which is probably true. But the detail about the MSP area (Minneapolis/St Paul) is accurate so I hear and is used well for... more the story. And sometimes, after some waiting around and watching the perps, things can fall into place..Isn't that what a lot of police work is about? Hard work and sometimes some luck?
review 2: I managed to get about 40 pages into this book when I gave up. Amazon did a nice sales pitch but Stelljes is a really bad writer. His characters last believability and his writing is drab and unimaginative. I am reminded of a line from an old Jimmy Buffett song, ".... ploughing straight ahead, come what may." A good writer can salvage a bad story. A bad writer telling a good story is still not worth the time. less

Great new series book. Be sure to start with the beginning "novelette" "First Case".

Good book. Glad I'd read the prequel first. Interesting plot and plenty of action.

Not graphic but suspenseful.
