review 1: “The Art of Thinking Clearly” is a collection of the 99 most prevalent errors in human thinking. A particularly fascinating thinking error is called ‘Anchoring’. When we have to make guesses we start with what we know and then venture into the unfamiliar. The problem is that we do it even when we don’t need to. A cognitive psychologist by the name of Amos Nathan Tversky asked people to spin a wheel of fortune and then guess how many countries were in the united nations. The highest estimates always came from the people who spun the highest numbers. He repeated the experiment and auctioned a bottle of wine to his students. The students with the highest numbers bid the most for the wine. The key here is that when people have to make uncertain decisions you can influ... moreence them by giving them a ball-park figure to anchor from. The catch being that the context doesn’t have to be even remotely related. To make the book more interesting advice on avoiding each of the errors can be inverted for clear instructions on how to persuade and confuse.
review 2: The book is a series of 3-4 page "chapters" regarding Dobelli's self-developed list of critical thinking and logical errors. He book is an easy read and I think worth the time for people interested in management, leadership, and critical thinking, but it also is not a 'bible' to decision making (I doubt one could be written that would be worth reading). The book is full of interesting anecdotes, but also laced with contrived scenarios that fit his specific point a little too well most of the time. I think it is important to understand that every decision making opportunity in your life will have multiple factors to consider and that when reading the book one should try and understand the overall point and let the specifics of his examples slide. less
