review 1: I'm still trying to figure out what I thought of this book. Whether it's true or not doesn't bother me, but I am having a hard time with Emma, who even though the main subject of the book, isn't developed enough for me to like her. Ron (the character) seems a little self-indulgent at times, but I like the way he negotiates competing thoughts that consume him and is concurrently selfish and aware of his selfishness.
review 2: I read and enjoyed Ron Currie's first novel, Everything Matters!, so I was excited about this one, and I think it lived up to my expectations. He does a really good job with these sort of cool, metafictional, genre-bending books, where it's unclear what is fiction and what is fact, but overall, you can feel a strong intensity of emotional
... more truth in the story as a whole. You can definitely argue that it's a little self-indulgent to write a novel where the main character is also a novelist named Ron Currie Jr., who experiences great literary fame and legacy after "dying" and becomes world famous for his beautiful soul-touching words. But I still liked this a lot. I would recommend reading Everything Matters! first, if you haven't already. less
