review 1: Personal dignity was once something valued in Western culture and that is why we find it so beautifully portrayed in novels like Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice. Interesting that characters like Elizabeth Bennet and Jane Eyre continue to captivate and intrigue modern young women, even as the worldview that informs these characters’ principled choices would seem offensive to postmodern sensibilities. Interesting also that I have found personal dignity to be a hallmark trait of the mature, theologically grounded Christians I have had the pleasure of meeting over the course of my life. Hence, I felt of one-mind with the authors as they viewed the tough issues young women face today through the lens of personal dignity. Not so much a Bible study, but rather an old-fash... moreioned moral and philosophical treatise, young women (age 16+) would undoubtedly benefit from this book – perhaps discussing it with their mothers, considering its premises prayerfully and Biblically. Most of what I read in these pages clarified and confirmed much of what I already try to emphasize in the raising of my fourteen year old daughter: read widely, especially the classics; develop intellectually; pursue theological depth and understanding; use your leisure time mindfully; value yourself as God’s daughter and expect to be treated with value and respect by the men in your life; embrace modesty in conduct and dress because of your love for God and your value of yourself; resist the trappings of youth culture – the endless need to be entertained, the over-emphasis on physical appearance versus the life of the mind and spirit, the pull of advertising and social media, the ready giving of oneself emotionally and physically to boys. One caveat: the chapter on “Finding Your Voice” may make some points that are concerning to those who take a very conservative view of women’s role in the church. I personally did not have any issue with it, but I can see how some might. The exposition on Hagar and Abigail was excellent in that chapter. Final caveat: the book tackles issues such as pornography, fornication, homosexuality, and masturbation, and therefore is not for very young girls, or for girls who have not already been exposed to these issues through parental discipleship.
review 2: Thank you Rosalie De Rosset and the team of contributors for offering a picture of Godly womanhood that encourages women to be strong, "spirited" and courageous. Her exhortation for women is more in line with those Woman warriors of the Bible. I also loved the engagement with literature and the recommended reading in the back of the book. I have been disappointed time and time again with the weak shallow theology in books that address Godly womanhood, so I was so excited when I came upon this text. This book is a must read! less
