review 1: Imagine a mix of Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland, and Howl's moving castle in one book. The world Rosamund creates is ridiculously wonderful. The whole book is a huge riddle that keeps you guessing and despite the main characters' flaws I couldn't help but still love them because it made them more real. My only qualm is sometimes I was confused on the rules, riddles, house, and why she could or couldn't do certain things (sorry if that's very vague, but I'm trying to stay away from spoilers) But I guess that comes with reading a book where you have no idea how things work.
review 2: The book started off fairy captivating. The world we are introduced to is unique and enchanting. However, Nyx the protagonist really didn't earn my favor because she's jus
... moret too selfish and angry all the time to be likeable. The many times she acted impulsively are just face-palm-worthy. Aside from her many annoying characteristics that I sucked up and dealt with until the end of the book, she at least was not a weak and helpless damsel in distress- so it could've been worse. Now about the love triangle deal. Sure, Shade is Ignifex's shadow and all, so technically they're the same person (or demon), but I just couldn't think of it that way because of their completely different personalities. I couldn't understand Nyx's love for both of them and her almost non-existent guilt for kissing Shade after just having kissed Ignifex. Especially when they both clearly detested eachother. My favorite thing about the entire book is the character Ignifex. Yes, he is gorgeous and sexy and super charismatic. However, what makes his character so compelling is how he is clearly the most deep and profound character in the entire book. From the beginning, we see him as unfaltering and confident in everything he does. Yet his love for Nyx is so pure that he shows her his vulnerable side. While the rest of the world believes he is evil and selfish, the ironic twist of the book slowly creeps up and shows that even our Nyx is more capable in cruelty than Ignifex is. To her credit, however, she does realize many of her mistakes and mends them well. Overall, this book started off strong and hit a few weak points with its confusing plot elements. The ending was hardly comprehensible, but I can't complain much since I am just happy Nyx was able to make amends instead of living with guilt for the rest of her life. I am not particularily satisfied with how Ignifex returns yet isn't exactly the same guy as before. Sorry, just because you look like him with unruly hair and have the same eyes does not make you the same compelling and charismatic demon you once were. Anyways, this book was fairly interesting and somewhat not a book you have to force yourself to finish. I would recommend it if you like dark, twisted stories but don't mind sacrificing love for most characters and the ability to understand the author's purpose for the ending. less

A heavily mythological story about a girl named Nyx. She is born into a family where her entire life has been devoted towards marrying the Gentle Lord because her father made a bargain with him. On her seventeenth birthday she sets off to be married; not only is it her mission to be married to him, but also she must destroy the Gentle Lord in order to free the land where she lives, Arcadia. It’s a fascinating read, and the plotline is fairly entertaining. If you’re a fan of myths, and Greek culture, it’s a great read for that. The romance theme in this novel is also seen a lot, and proves how strong love can be. It kind of resembles Beauty and The Beast in some ways, the fact the Gentle Lord is a demon and is seen as a monster is like the beast, but Nyx still sees the good in him. The ending of the novel takes quite the turn, but it’s still really well written. Overall, it was a great novel on love even though the plot dwindled at times.
