review 1: ES IT’S A ROMANCE NOVEL GET OVER YOURSELF. (Also fair warning about romance novels – it had SEX and I’m going to TALK ABOUT IT.) I had a lot of downtime while I procrastinated my final projects. And spoiler: this was checked out from the library as an ebook, which can be read in a web browser when you’re supposed to look busy but in reality have nothing to do but sit at a computer screen. So ebooks are perfect and romance novels are frivolous drivel and sometimes that’s fun. Tell me you don’t watch any reality shows or cheesy romcoms or mindlessly violent action flicks, or play video games or board games or cards, or simply lay around sometimes staring at the ceiling and thinking about existentialism. YOU TOTALLY DO.And frankly the plot summary of this one was ... moretoo good to pass up. First, the cover: clearly a period romance, with some sexy lying-about-on-beds-and-cushions-in-white-dresses business going on. PINK LETTERING of the title clearly indicates fluffy potentially happy marriage. And then we get this:After Talia Dobson is jilted at the altar, she endures another humiliation: a substitute groom! The elder brother of her runaway betrothed has taken matters into his own hands. Shy Talia has long held a secret attraction for Gabriel Richardson, the handsome Earl of Ashcombe. But when she’s wedded, bedded and dispatched alone to his country estate, the timid beauty discovers one night of passion has ignited a bold inner fire. While his lovely green-eyed bride is out of sight, she is not far from Gabriel’s mind–and when Talia is abducted by French spies, the earl fears he may lose what he’s only just found. Yet the wife he races to rescue is a far cry from the gentle bride he abandoned. She’s a woman who dares to demand forever after from her husband….HOW COULD YOU NOT WANT TO READ THIS IMMEDIATELY. The characters are named Talia and Gabriel. *snicker* They are blackmailed by her greedy gold-digging father and his gambling-addict younger brother into marrying. *giggles* They share one night of passion *cough* and then she’s KIDNAPPED BY FRENCH SPIES AND HE GOES OFF TO RESCUE HER AND IT JUST GETS BETTER AND BETTER WHEEEEE.So I decided to spend some quality procrastination time reading it. And OH MAN IT WAS DELIGHTFULLY SILLY. I won’t spoil it for you because half the fun of romance novels is the WHAT IS HAPPENING OK THAT IS HAPPENING WE’RE JUST GOING WITH IT OK HERE WE GO WHEEE feeling of plot twists and OH OK THEY WENT FROM MAKING OUT TO SIMULTANEOUS CLIMAX IN ABOUT TWO PAGES sex scenes, but just some things to look forward to:1. Talia is a totally modern woman who READS and has CURVES and doesn’t like to be all society and fancy-dress, and her father was born a poor man who made tons of money in TRADE and wants to marry her off to royalty but she’s so awkward and everyone hates her at parties so he buys her a younger son for a last-resort husband and she’s ALL OF THE NOT EXCITED and then he leaves her at the altar and she’s the LAUGHINGSTOCK of the town and her father blackmails the older brother, the current Earl of Ashcombe, into marrying her, and he’s PISSED OFF about it, and she’s freaking out because the current Earl is totally her life-long crush but she doesn’t want to marry him if he’ll hate her forever because that would be AWFUL (and can we take a minute to appreciate that his name is Gabriel and he’s described as a golden Adonis-like person, all blonde and chiseled and perfect, but slightly aloof and clearly in need of some true love to soften his heart. LOLNESS ROFL and such.).2. The aforementioned sex scenes involve FOREPLAY and KISSING and lots of woman-pleasing because this is one nineteenth-century earl who totally understands that taking it slow and making sure your virginal wife gets all the orgasms is the best way to marital bliss, as opposed to mainstream films and books, which range from Marie Antoinette to The Duchess and usually involve terrible marriage nights and bad sex and far too much male-pleasure-focused thrusting. Let’s just say this nobleman knows where the clitoris is, even if he never calls it by name.3. Kidnapping by French spies results in lots of ridiculous tromping over the French countryside and about three about-face OH HE’S ACTUALLY THE BAD GUY HAHAHA moments and a sideplot with the French spy’s concubine-lover who actually loves him and causes a lot of trouble because WOMEN AND THEIR JEALOUSIES I MEAN REALLY.Basically it’s a romance novel and you knew what you were getting into and it’s enjoyable for what it achieves. Prepare for giggles. Also it’s modern and the genre has decided that calling an erection “his velvet manhood” was a bad idea. Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing yet.TL;DR: It’s a “historical” romance novel. You get what you expect. And what you expect is fantasy sex involving simultaneous orgasms between a married couple who conveniently love each other and can’t get enough of each other, and meanwhile there’s a whole plot involving being kidnapped by French spies. Very melodramatic. Which is, of course, the point.
