review 1: Everville: The First Pillar by Roy Huff is a delightful read for anyone who enjoys fantasy. I am always fascinated by authors who can create fantastic worlds. In this, Mr Huff does not disappoint. He creates multiple dimensions and characters with wonderful names. Some characters can travel between the various worlds. Once such is Owen Sage, a college freshman who suddenly discovers that there are dark happenings in the world and in Everville, and that he must prevent the evil from destroying the worlds. I really enjoyed Owen's first person narrative. It makes the story flow quickly and introduces the reader to these worlds as Owen finds out about them.On campus, as in Everville, it is sometimes difficult to know who is battling on the side of good and evil, and the balan... morece can change. Owen must learn the clues and use of weapons to fight the evil. Can he do it, and what will be the ramifications? This is an easy quick read written by a great storyteller. Enjoy.
review 2: Imagine Alice in Wonderland featuring a boy named Owen instead of a girl called Alice and taking place in modern times. This would be an accurate description of Everville. Alice in Wonderland was a fantastical book and Everville could be as well except for the writing. Sadly, I didn't read past Chapter Ten which is about a third of the way through since the chapters are all very short. The story is written as if the reader already knows everything about the plot and the characters. We aren't told the protagonist's sex or name until Chapter Two. There is very little description or explanation and things fit too easily. Owen, the Alice character, finds himself in another place with an unusual man called The Keeper. Luckily for Owen, his best friend's uncle's school friend knows EXACTLY what is happening. Owen is informed that the Echo Club, a club offered at his college, is for people just like him who also have or had the weight of the world resting on their shoulders. Owen's two best friends, Dante and Anika, immediately believe Owen when he tells them his far-fetched story and they are eager to be involved in the adventure. The story just doesn't ring true for me on many levels. Perhaps for a younger audience, middle school, this book would be a fun read. less
