review 1: I think kids who loved Winn-Dixie or The One and Only Ivan will eat up this sweet story of a young abused elephant and the little girl in Chiangmai Mai, Thailand who rescues the elephant. Some kids may find the Thai phrases sprinkled throughout a little confusing, but I really think kids will root for Tua and Pohn Pohn as they run away from Pohn pohn's rotten owners. Would make a fun read around for 3rd/4th grade. Sweet and fast moving.
review 2: Tua is a small girl living in Thailand. Tua loves to explore and finds a hole in a wall. With this opportunity she has to go through the hole and see where it takes her. She finds two mahuats (elephant trainers) and a young elephant. She immediately connects with the elephant who is chained and being made to do
... morethings by using a bamboo switch while the men get money from the people to feed the elephant. Tua followed the men to their camp and saw how they mistreated the elephant. She slept and when she woke she knew she had to help the elephant. She unchained him and then quietly took the elephant away. She went first to her aunt who is an entertainer. After providing for the elephant shelter and food, she was discovered. Her aunt told her to take the elephant to the temple for safety as the two men were trying to get her back for their own uses. The escapes and dangers continue until Tua and Phon-Phon, the elephant have to move again to a wild-life refuge. After getting there and facing down the two crooks, Tua and her mother are offered jobs at the refuge. Thus, Tua, her mother and Phon-Phon are able to live together safely. This is a good book for information about wild-life refuges and would be interesting to girls. less

A sweet and sometimes quiet book. It makes me want to go and work with elephants.

Sid Fleischman's story The White Elephant was much, much better.

I wish there had been a glossary for the reader to refer to.
