review 1: …and this is where I left the series, mid book. Unfortunately Downie's main character seems unable to put a foot right in any sense of the word. Her excellent portrayal of Roman life in this era is terribly undercut by the constant sad-sack nature of her protagonist which quickly becomes tedious rather than comic, and the cardboard characterization of his slave, Tilla, the "love interest". Really too bad.
review 2: This is the 3rd in a series and I caught this one on Audible. Not bad. Pretty good narrator. Set around 120 CE in Roman occupied Britain, the "Medicus," Ruso, heads home to Gaul, where troubles heap upon troubles. His slave/girlfriend/assistant Tilla tries to help him solve some mysteries, and then he worries about her as well. Ruso is such a good... more guy you sometimes wish he'd get the recognition he deserves. less
