review 1: I was sad to finish Semper Fidelis knowing I would have to wait a while before I could visit with Ruso and Tilla again. Once again, Ms. Downie has offered a wonderful read with twists and turns to keep my eyes glued to the page. This has been my favorite so far, taking Ruso back to the army as the medical officer of the 20th legion inspecting the outpost medical facilities in anticipation of the Emperor’s visit to Britannia. ... morey am a stickler for reading a series in order, but I think these books stand alone pretty well. The characters are strong, the time and place are meticulously researched, and the writing really makes you feel part of the story. The mystery itself is not much of a mystery, but that's OK. It's still a very enjoyable read, and I will now go back and read the intervening stories. less
