review 1: Set in Britannia, AD 120, this informative historical novel features our hero, Latin-speaking Gaius Petreius Ruso from Gaul, a medic temporarily serving as an investigator. Ruso with his wife Tilla find themselves precariously trapped in a conspiracy involving theft, forgery, and murder. The author intricately weaves her exacting research on Roman coinage and counterfeit money into a mesmerizing tale in the cities of Londinium and Verulamium during Hadrian's reign.
review 2: In second-century Roman Britain, when tax collector Julius Asper goes missing along with the town’s tax money, medicus Gaius Petreius Ruso, reluctantly agrees to investigate. His wife Tillia becomes friends with Asper’s very pregnant wife, an Iceni who happens to be a descendant of B... moreoudicca. The characters are entertaining if somewhat lacking in depth. The story is well thought out, but the ending is unsatisfying in almost every way. Just good enough that I will probably check the next installment to see if it is more satisfying. less
