Inspector Wexford
review 1: Rendell sets up a wonderfully creepy antagonist and a promising premise: Chief Inspector Wexford has a career-long nemesis! But the subplot about his subordinate officer's obsession with a Muslim family is weird and kind of annoying. The officer, Hannah Armstrong, is constantly visiting the family to question them about their teenage daughter. Armstrong is worried that the family is trying to force the girl into an arranged marriage. She has absolutely no proof of this, but continues to harass the parents and other relatives as far away as London. Which seems potentially illegal? Or maybe the law is different in England...Anyway, it would be a huge waste of resources and I kept wishing Wexford would put his foot down. Still recommended for fans of Ruth Rendell. As usual th... moree syntax is solid, the settings atmospheric, and the characters interesting.
review 2: Rendell's late Wexford novels are good enough for hardcore Rendell fans (like me), but I doubt the casual reader would enjoy them that much. In this specific novel, suspension of disbelief is required to swallow the feasibility of the plot, the characters, and the *motivations* of the characters. Another unfortunate aspect of late Wexford novels is Rendell's obsession with what she calls political correctness. Her characters are *always* talking about it, wrestling with it, and wearily succumbing to it; it is Rendell's unsubtle commentary on her general disapproval of it. Still, in spite of all these complaints, I was genuinely taken aback by the ending of this novel. Because of this, and b/c Rendell is still highly readable, I give this 3 stars. less
