review 1: This book met the "good" criteria for pulling me in and keeping me reading throughout. I should probably rate it higher, but I just can't bring myself to...in the end, I felt a bit beaten down by this book. It was overall a harsh and gritty look at human nature, even though it had some great stuff (father daughter relationship, friendship) among the harshness. The first half of this book is just phenomenal, but it takes a turn into more gritty, violence mid-way through. I just can't bring myself to rate it higher. I do like to delve into harsh books/ horror and thrillers, but my favorite books leave me either revved up and looking for adventure or lifted up and this book left me feeling sad and dirty in the end.
review 2: This was a hard book for me to rea
... mored. I usually don't like to read books that leave me all bloody. This book is written very graphically which was hard for me. Not my usual read. But it was for a book club discussion so I read it - in two evenings. I could not stop from reading it. It was like being at a train wreck. I had to know if the girl was saved. The author seems to bring the "hero" down to the level of the villain. The story left me wonder how life would ever be redeemable again for him. It surely won't be the same so maybe it is about sacrifices. The book club discussion help me a lot in sorting it out in my head. less
