review 1: This is probably Jahn's best book. It is told from the perspective from many different neighbors and characters, some likable, some despicable. The center of the story focuses on the violent attack of a young lady and the neighbors that ignore her screams for help because they are so wrapped up in their own self induced misery. Well written, thrilling and hard to put down; each page brings about another view of the minds and troubles of this apartment complex.
review 2: I generally don't read books that I'm know I'm going to rate poorly to the end, but this is a quick read, so I powered through. Loosely based on the murder of Kitty Genovese, Jahn seeks to explore those neighbors who failed to call the police in response to a murder going on right in front... more of them. In Jahn's rendition, the neighbors are so preoccupied by their own issues, they simply forget a murder is happening in the courtyard of their apartment complex. Full of cliches, the writing is poor, and the multitude of characters are unappealing. With the exception of one or two characters, the others evoke no emotion and the reader cares very little for them or the extreme circumstances of their lives (from two couples engaging in the swinger lifestyle for the first time, a husband and wife who think the wife killed a baby in a stroller, and two men newly exploring a homosexual relationship, nothing is run of the mill for these bystanders). Poorly written and poorly explored, Jahn takes an interesting idea and turns out a terrible novel. less
