review 1: I'm easing my way into Japanese fiction and this was a wonderful start! This little book consists of two short stories: "hell screen" and "the spider's thread". Hell Screen is set in Feudal Japan and gives a wonderful picture of its setting, as well as the gripping and horrific tale of a painter commissioned to paint a screen. The Spider's Thread is a more allegorical fairytale of a man trying to escape hell.
review 2: nice break from the introspective or life changing books i've been reading of late. i will never fully understand the impact of the words bc of cultural and century gaps but i missed reading myth stories. i thought this would be more disturbing and psychological than it actually was (think grudge). it was just enough so that i could read through
... moreit and not feel chills. but i'm expecting nightmares tonight lol less
