review 1: I loved this book. Nordic mysteries often leave me...well, cold. I'm not generally a huge fan. But this one drew me in from the first page. Rebecka Martinsson is a main character I really like. She is strong, real, smart, proud. And she's not the only one. The alternate narrative, featuring Elina Pettersson, a schoolteacher who was murdered in 1914 and who is a relative of the modern-day murder victim, doesn't kick in until 12%, which made it kind of startling. But it starts up when the investigators first learn about her, so it makes complete sense in that way. The writing is lovely, with a literary sensibility. BUT there's constant tension, a boy's life on the line, a bit of romantic tension, office and gender battles, and a heart-breaking sacrifice made by Rebecka. Ever... moreything always feels like it's moving forward, and it's pulling me deeper into the story constantly. I'm going to have to look up the earlier book featuring Rebecka, and I'll be on the lookout for future books. Wonderful!

Även roligt att Martinsson är kammaråklagare och således gör att boken inte blir så stereotypisk med en polis i huvudrollen. Jag är även imponerad av hur Larsson lyckats väva in lite historia i form av den för Kiruna viktiga disponent Hjalmar Lundbohm. less
