review 1: When her grandmother demands that she and her siblings marry before the year is out or lose their inheritance, Lady Minerva Sharpe comes up with a plan to thwart her. Minerva will advertise for a husband and pick the one that her grandmother will surely forbid. She doesn't expect Giles Masters to show up on her doorstep. He was the man she had loved for years, until he hurt her.Giles asks Minerva to stop using him as the basis of her villain in the gothic novels she writes. They come to an agreement. She will stop writing about him if he will agree to a fake engagement. Surely her grandmother will forbid her marriage to a rogue like him.This was a fun book and another good installment in the Hellions of Halstead Hall series. I thought Giles and Minerva were a wonderful cou... moreple, and I enjoyed the story arc about her parents' deaths. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
review 2: 3.5 stars. I enjoy the world Sabrina Jeffries created in this series. The characters, the writing, the romance, all of it are just wonderful. This book is part of that and therefore I found it delightful to read – however, for some reason the chemistry between the H/h wasn’t as good as the previous two books. I think the fact that the H/h kept each other at arm’s length, emotionally speaking, kept me at arm’s length as well. It was only in the glimpses of when Minerva and Giles let their guard down that I was drawn and invested to their characters and relationship. The game they were playing in their “fake-but-real” betrothal also didn’t make a lot of sense to me and the quick transition from the scene in the pond to their wedding day was a bumpy one – as if I was missing several pages in the story.I am enjoying the slow revelation in the mystery behind the death of their parents and I also like that the author is giving not-so-little hints about the romance that will be in Gabriel and Celia’s own books. less
