A Seaside Knitters Mystery
review 1: I picked up a volume in the middle of this series and couldn't keep the characters straight, so I got this first one from the library so I could figure out who everybody was. This series is very similar to Maggie Sefton's Knitting Mysteries, where the knitting group gets together to solve murders while knitting soft and lovely sweaters and shawls (in both series, there's a lot of yarn-touching going on). Once I sorted out all the characters, I found them to be a charming group. I liked it well enough that I might read another title in the series sometime. That's more than I can say for the Sefton books.
review 2: Holy crap, I thought I'd never finish this book.Besides being S L O W, the story was disappointing. I was expecting a mystery being solved by Izzy
... more (the character mentioned in all 3 paragraphs on the dust cover) and her knitting cohorts, some fun chatter about knitting and/or yarn, and some actual sleuthing. I didn't get any of that. The story was focused more on Izzy's aunt, Nell, "solving" (and I do use that word very loosely) the mystery; the knitting chatter was uninteresting at best; and all the real sleuthing seemed to have been done by the dead girl, before she died. I...guess... all the threads were wrapped up, but not so much in a satisfactory way. I hate to use the word "flat", but it fits. Everything except the scenery and the food descriptions was just flat, and there wasn't enough of the scenery mentioned to really make it exquisite. Maybe everything felt flat (shallow?) because the majority of the action took place "off stage", so to speak. People didn't DO things on the pages (other than eat, drink wine, and chat for a few minutes). Readers were told things were done, but not much was shown. And the characters weren't developed enough for me to really care about them. Yes, that's it. There was a whole lot of telling and not much showing in this book.As for the ending... I have no words, because, REALLY?? Bah. I'm already rewriting it in my head to make the experience better.I haven't decided yet if I'm going to give the second book in this series a chance. I know first books are sometimes rough around the edges as characters and places are very first introduced, but I think there's more than that wrong with this first book in a series. Still, I am giving this story one star because it had potential. I'm also giving it a bonus star for all the food that was mentioned and described in such detail that it stimulated my appetite and kept reminding me that I needed to eat. less

Loved it. Just a pleasant read with nice characters and no sex, no swearing, just a mystery.
