review 1: Pearl tells (in verse) the plaintive but not pathetic story of dragging herself through school each day thinking only of the problem at home- her beloved Granny lying in bed, drooling, lost to herself and to Pearl. Things become even more dreadful when her teacher insists that poems must rhyme and have rhythm, even though Pearl finds no rhythm or rhyme in her own life. Events unfold, Pearl and her mother have no choice but to deal with grieving and good-byes, but Granny's lessons survive and return to offer comfort in surprising ways.
review 2: Are there more verse novels than there used to be or am I just coming across a few of them right now? This is the second verse novel I have read within the space of a week that is a response to a teacher wanting a chil
... mored to write poetry. Pearl's teacher Miss Bruff, wants her to write poetry that rhymes. But Pearl doesn't have rhyme and rhythm within her, and her poems don't rhyme. This is a beautiful and poignant tale by a special girl, about her family, her class, and particularly her granny. Pearl is a bit of a loner at school ""I am in a group of one"". She lives with her mother and her grandmother. Her grandmother has always lived with them, but now is fading. Granny doesn't recognise Pearl anymore, and she is confined to her bed. Pearl offers some insights that really are beyond her years, but it doesn't detract from this wonderful story. less
