review 1: I still like the main character/series, but this wasn't the greatest story. Seemed more anchored in the atmosphere of Stalinist Russia rather than the mystery and actual characters, if that makes sense. (It did remind me how lucky I am to live in a place where I can blurt out whatever opinions or questions or criticisms I have and not be in fear that my neighbors or family members would report me to be sent away for being anti-state.) I will read more in the series, though.
review 2: This was a good mystery/suspense novel with Russian history thrown in. Eastland is a good writer and his main character, Inspector Pekkala, is easy to like and very believable. I learned several things about Tsar Nicholas II & his entourage and found the depiction of Stalin to be
... more different from the usual - Stalin is almost a sympathetic character in this book! I will be looking for more of Eastland's work. less

I liked the first one in the series better, but I still enjoyed this one.
