Inspector Pekkala
review 1: I enjoyed the historical parts of the book about the Tzar and Tzarina of Russia, Rasputin and later, Stalin, plus the descriptions of the Russian cities, food, and Siberia (sounds even worse than I'd thought). I liked the story line and Inspector Pekkala and his side-kick. My only complaint would be that the story jumps between time frames, and it was sometimes difficult to follow. A very interesting mystery, though.
review 2: The second book in the "Inspector Pekkala" series finds Pekkala in the middle of "Project Konstantin". This is the (fictionalized) development of the T-34 tank. The head of the project has been killed, and Pekkala must find out what happened. Along the way he crosses swords with the NKVD and the "White Guards".Stalin figures more promi
... morenently in this book than in "Eye of the Red Tsar". Once again, he is portrayed as a harsh yet sympathetic character. I still can't fathom why Eastland chose this characterization for a brute responsible for the deaths of at least 20 million. less
