review 1: While it's not a deep book, Thomas' Midwife's Tale is definitely an entertaining and interesting one. Inspired by a real midwife, Thomas examines the role of midwife and widow Bridget in a city undergoing great changes....York during the seige from Parliament. Political intrigue abounds, and Thomas does a good job of showing how women are both very much a part of it, and very much not allowed to openly hold power. I also liked the part of Bridget's spunky maid Martha, who would be lauded as an indepedent fiery American girl now, but whose spirit back them only landed her into a life of crime and possible prostitution. In the plot, Bridget's friend is framed for killing her rebel husband and Bridget has only a few days to find the real killer. I will be on the lookout for m... moreore of these fun mysteries.
review 2: The Midwife's Tale is so good. I love the author's vision of how England was like during this time period. Lady Bridget is such a strong character and Martha too. I love learning more about Martha's background and how she came to work for a Lady Bridget. I thought she was a lot of fun. I, also, love the mystery and suspense of the story. And I was completely thrown off of "Who did it". Great book! I look forward to more by Sam Thomas and more of the series. Five stars less

Sam Thomas needs to stick with academia - poorly developed characters, slow plot, some anachronisms.

I loved this book. Full of adventure for the times for a midwife. Interesting insight into history.
