review 1: Though my favourite genre is not paranormal, I was really curious about this book, since one of my favourite books in the world is from this author. When I started reading it I immediately thought about the film City of Angels, so I was a little nervous about that and I secretly prayed for a different ending!!! LOOOLIt turned out to be so intense, so unexpected and I loved it! All the characters were interesting and right from the start you get caught up in the story and want to find out more and more.Oh and of course I loved that there was a Portuguese character! YAY! :) If you are a fan of paranormal romance this is a wonderful book to read. I so needed a change from my usual readings and this was perfect!
review 2: 2.5 Stars... This book was bittersweet for
... more me. Sweet, in that it was a new concept, and a great story. I actually put this book down and quit reading it after a few chapters. I was bored. There was so much inner dialog and endless discussion of feelings that I was like, okay, I get it, she's confused and is struggling, let's move on...I ended up picking the book back up and forcing myself through it. That in itself is NOT a desirable quality to have in a book. I can't quite say that it was well written though, not as a whole anyhow... The plot was strong, and the characters were decent. But there is so much more to writing than just those things. To write an excellent book requires the "perfect storm", if you will, the convergence of all the components and the right timing to leave the reader closing the book with a smile on their face and satisfaction in their bellies. This didn't quite do it for me. It wasn't a bad read by any means but it had the common trappings of a self-published novel that were terribly distracting. Spelling errors, word echoes, etc. There were also some things that completely kicked me out of the story. In a previous status update, I commented that Lucyna (the main character) takes on a human form and notes the lack of eating, breathing and heartbeat and yet she's blushing and talking. I'm a details person so, this bothered me in that, if your heart isn't beating, you have no blood pressure, thus blushing is impossible. Same line of logic applies to talking. You have to breathe in order to talk. Air passing through your vocal chords is what enables your voice to work. The other aspect that I found frustratingly annoying was the repetition of the word "whilst". It occurred 37 times. Every time I saw it, I wanted to tattoo it backwards on the authors forehead so every day she looked in the mirror she'd get to see it too...for 37 days. Turn about is fair play, eh?Towle doesn't devote much to describing the settings either. I know that some of this is subjective to each reader as there are authors like Tom Clancy that go over the top with descriptions and his readers love it. But I felt the descriptions were a bit scanty for my tastes. I like to be immersed in the world the author has created and that didn't really happen for me. This was more of a story and character driven novel but the characters were a bit lacking as well. Especially since it was written in 1st person and from Lucyna's POV and we were mostly stuck inside her head without too much of her take on the surrounding world, just her feelings. There wasn't much in the way of character development either. None of the characters seemed to grow, change or mature through the story. The plot had some twists and turns that I enjoyed but it wasn't enough to carry the whole story. The result is a bit bland. Not bad, not good, just bland. T less

I loved this story, it wasn't anything at all what I expecting and if truth be told it was more!

Very interesting book. Totally unlike TMS and WTS. More sci-fi-ish, but interesting.
