review 1: I struggled with the review of this book, The idea, the Jinn (which I really love) and Jai were wonderful....but so many things bugged me I actually took note of them..here we go...so Ari breaks into a jog/run and this is the honest to god description of it “The lactic acid in her muscles burning as she forced them into sudden and intense exercise.” Just...no...stop it. There's also the 'oh hey look at me, I'm down and hip with the kids and their popular social media outlets' when facebook, twitter and skype are all mentioned in the same paragraph, in italics. It was just unnecessary. Also apparent advertising for other books, which always irritates me, unless it is a vague reference to a classic, don't mention them...in italics..it's just sad. Names like Laurie Hollis... moreter aren't helping either. It's as if the author is so desperate to communicate with the younger generation that she sat in a teenage girls room while writing this and just poured everything she could find into references in the book.And was this book sponsored by Playstation 3?Another thing that annoyed me was the use of 'btw' in dialogue, used in an email or text message sure, or even actually spelt out loud B-T-W, but to use it like it's a real word, just felt like this book really has been written by either a child or an adult who desperately wants to connect with teenagers.Despite my little rant there, the underlying story isn't so bad, it has potential..even if this I yet another YA where the protagonist has absent parents for whatever reason. I'm torn between liking the idea, and wanting to rip it to shreds and edit the crap out of it until it resembles something that it could have been with the proper help..something fantastic.Now, after finishing the book I found I actually really enjoyed it, despite certain niggles that drew me to near insanity, Jai was lovely and tormented, Charlie was kind of an ass you had to feel sorry for, Rachel and...there was another girl, weren't really a big enough part that I was upset when Ari made decisions about them. Unfortunately, this book only really started getting good for me around the 70% mark, which is just a bit too late in the game. I had a quick read of the blurbs for the next two books and it sounds like a story has been dragged out over two books, better served as one, and I just can't be bothered unfortunately. But pretty cover and had this book been longer, more descriptive and not had that whole 'written by a child' vibe going, I might have even moved it into favourites. A weird one for me..because I loved it..and I didn't at the same time.
review 2: Die (fast) 18-jährige Ari denkt, dass ihr größtes Problem die zerbrochene Freundschaft zu ihrem Jugendfreund und Schwarm Charlie ist, bis sie erfährt, dass sie eigentlich kein Mensch ist: Sie ist ein Dschinn. Und nicht nur irgendeiner ...Der Halb-Dschinn, Halb-Succubus Jai soll deshalb auch ihren Bodyguard mimen.Ich bin ein großer Fan von Samanthas Young Erwachsenenbüchern, weshalb ich auch sehr gespannt auf ihr Jugendbuch war. Vielleicht waren meine Erwartungen deshalb auch ein bisschen zu hochgesteckt.Die Idee an sich ist nicht schlecht. Ich habe bis jetzt er ein Buch über Dschinn gelesen und dort waren sie Flaschengeister, die einen Wünsche erfüllen. Es fiel mir trotzdem nicht schwer mich an die magischen und mächtigen Wesen zu gewöhnen, die es hier gab. Allerdings kann ich die "Kings" immer noch nicht auseinanderhalten. An der Umsetzung happert es allerdings ein bisschen: Ari ist der typische YA-Hauptcharakter, der auf einmal etwas besonderes ist. Obwohl ... Sie gefällt mir noch viel weniger als andere Vertreterinnen des Genres. Zum Beispiel das, was sie ihren "Vater" mit seiner neuen Freundin angetan hat. Das geht ja mal gar nicht! Da sie das gleich auf Seite 27 brühwarm erzählt, hatte ich gleich ein schlechtes Bild von ihr. Ich konnte bei ihr nur die Liebe zu Charlie ein bisschen verstehen. Er ist ein totales Wrack, das kifft, aber sie liebt ihn, weil sie hofft, dass er wieder so wird wie früher.Was mich zu dem noch an der Hauptprota gestört hat, war, dass sie keine sonderliche Entwicklung durchmacht. Sie wirkte irgendwie immer fern und nicht greifbar, ich konnte einfach keine Beziehung zu ihr aufbauen.Der dritte wichtige Charakter, Ari's "Artgenosse" Jai war auch wieder typisch YA-Roman: Gutaussehend, stark und die Weiber stehen nur so Schlange. Das hat man doch auch schon mal alles irgendwo so ähnlich gelesen.Die Perspektive war auch ein bisschen ungeschickt gewählt. Teilweise musste ich Passagen noch mal lesen, weil ich nicht verstanden hatte, dass der Absatz zu einem völlig anderen Charakter gehörte.Am Ende kam es mir auch so vor, als wurde überall nur ein bisschen etwas angekratzt. Ich weiß, es gibt 4 Bände, aber es war mir einfach zu wenig.Das Cover gefällt mir wahnsinnig gut, weil es einfach zu der ganzen Geschichte passt. Die Flammen und das Mädchen, das ihn Flammen steht sehen einfach toll aus ;)Ich denke, dass vielen die Geschichte von Ari, Charlie und Jai gefallen könnte und den Rezensionen nach zu urteilen gefällt sie auch vielen. Für mich wurden allerdings nur Klischees aufgewärmt und mit einer unsympathischen Hauptprotagonisten versehen.Leider gefiel mir Frau Youngs erstes Jugendbuch nur mittelmäßig. Die Storyidee war gut, aber Ari als weiblicher Hauptcharakter hat ziemlich viel kaputt gemacht. less
