review 1: This is a great book, full of color, photographs, and captions, that reads almost like a mystery, even though it's nonfiction! It tells about the bacteria that is killing these frogs in great detail (but not too much text), and explains what is being done to protect them. Great back matter that includes an end note, an author's note, how to determine between a frog and toad, how to help local frogs, global rescue efforts, a glossary, an index, and a section with websites and other books about how to learn more. Would make for a great read-aloud, although kids will want to look at the pictures up close.
review 2: This is a book I would recommend to elementary school kids age 9-12 years old. The story is well told, like a detective story. It is done in simple b
... moreurst of information and it connects the dots for kids well. The story of the Golden Frog of Panama is interesting and has a strong environmental background. As I read the book I too was intrigued by the mystery of what happened to the Golden Frogs. I also like that because this is a true story it ended without a conclusion since we don't know what will ultimately happen. I think the story could influence the reader to find out more and find out the status of the Golden Frogs. less
