review 1: Interesting picture book describing a female godwit's journey from birth to migration to returning home to Alaska to have babies.Grand, textured, collage illustrations.Godwit's fly nonstop for eight days and nights from Alaska to New Zealand. Yeah. Boss. According to a tracking device, one flew 7,270 miles. Nonstop. What? Awesome. Also interesting is that their mom's leave before the dads. Godwits follow their dad's to the coast and chill with them for a bit before joining and migrating with the flock. Could be used for story times or NF lessons. K-2.
review 2: In this children’s nonfiction picture book, a female Godwit chick hatches out of her egg in the Godwit breeding grounds in Alaska, eventually growing into an adult and making the arduous journey (7270
... moremiles!) to New Zealand. Mia Posada’s beautiful collage illustrations perfectly complement Sandra Markle’s descriptions of the Godwits’ lifecycle and migration. This collaboration was obviously produced with care and attention to detail. Markle – in an author’s note – writes that, as a resident of NZ, herself, the Godwit migration has “a special meaning for me.” I was thrilled to discover that residents of NZ host both welcome and farewell celebrations for the migrating Godwits. Another excellent reason to move to NZ (in my opinion!). :) less
