review 1: This was my first Cain novel, and my feelings are mixed. The action is great. Good, descriptive first-person combat sequences are not something I read a lot of, and Cain is chock full of them. However, there were really two stories going on here. The back cover lead me to believe that the first quarter of the book would be saving the governor's daughter and the latter portion would take place on the space hulk. In reality, it was the exact opposite. The adventure on the space hulk really only took up the last third (at most) of the book, which was by far the best part of the novel. I wish I could rate this 2.5 stars, because it WAS good, and I DID like it, but there were parts that remain hard to get into.
review 2: Lots of fun. Plenty of humour and action, as
... moreyou'd expect from a Ciaphas Cain novel. It could have benefited from more interplay between Cain and the Space Marines, though I'm glad Mitchell made what there was shine rather than going for obvious laughs. The action is fantastic and a little bit mad, as always in this series, and the humour is strong. I particularly enjoyed the back and forth between Cain and the self serving and ambitious Mira. less
