review 1: Sam goes to the playground and finds no toys available to play with. He gets mad. His mad grows until he is madder than ever in his life. Suddenly a little creature begins jumping around scaring the children away. This little black furry ball is a Temper. Sam claims him as a pet. But the Temper is not a wonderful pet. He gets up to all sorts of mischief and Sam gets consequences. After a couple of days of this, Sam decides to subdue the Temper. He thinks of every trick he has been taught such as counting to ten. He wrestles with the Temper and wins. The illustrations in this book are a little bit different and have a vintage feel to them with slightly more subdued color hues. They are fun to look at. Even though the Temper is portrayed as a very bad pet, he is n... moreot drawn in a scary way. This book has a very good message about taking the blame for one's temper and how to control it. But this book was advertized for ages 3-7. The wording on each page is very lengthy and the topic is too mature and subtle for preschoolers. I think this book would be very appropriate for ages 6-8
review 2: Both of my boys enjoyed this book. They enjoyed watching Sam's temper come to life and wreak havoc. It was interesting to watch them slowly realize the consequences of Sam letting his temper run rampant. My oldest and I were able to talk about that it was really Sam all along imagining his temper being the one at fault. When Sam realizes the negative impact his temper has on his everyday fun and relationships, he starts to try different ways to get the temper under control. He tries different ways he sees others get control before finally figuring out his own method. I felt this book could be a good learning tool and empowering for children as they read. Rather than being told, they learn and experience WITH Sam. The illustrations were fun and the story had the boys laughing and engaged. It would be a great book to have on hand for when your child's own temper gets a life of its own. less
