review 1: I received The Beekeeper's Daughter to review from Simon and Schuster. I haven't read anything by Santa Montefiore before. To be honest, I was sceptical at first. However it is beautifully written. The main storyline moves between 1930s Dorset and Massachusetts in the early 70s. It explores the relationships of Grace and her daughter Trixie. Grace comes of age in pre WW2 rural England, where her father is the beekeeper and head gardener on an hereditary estate. After the sudden death of her father, Grace marries her childhood friend, but the outbreak of war intervenes and the young couple are separated. In the absence of the men at war, Grace assumes a greater role on the estate's running which brings her into contact with the young and handsome heir. After the war Grace a... morend her wounded husband emigrate to America, where their beloved daughter Trixie is born. Coming of age in the 70s Trixie is a beautiful and impetuous young woman who falls desperately in love with Jasper, a talented young singer from England. jasper is called home after a family tragedy. It is only then that Grace realises there is a connection to their family's past, and a deep secret that has impacted on her marriage.Grace and Trixie's stories are revealed through dual timelines. Grace's life in prewar England and her love of bees and gardening is captured beautifully. While Trixie is not as fully drawn, she is an engaging character. When Grace becomes seriously ill, Trixie realises she needs to understand her family's past and travels to England. The Beekeeper's Daughter is beautifully written, it was a great book to relax and lose myself in. While some of the plot twists are perhaps improbable, it is a testament to Santa Montefiore's skill that I wanted to keep reading and really enjoyed it. Highly recommended.
